PMHS STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT THE TV INDUSTRY & MORE AT PELHAM CIVICS CAREER WORKSHOP

PMHS students filled Alumni Hall for a Career Workshop on Tuesday morning March 21st to learn about the job and career pathways in the Entertainment & TV Industry. But what the panel of experts who volunteered for the morning seminar taught them was so much more.

It was all part of the Pelham Civic Association’s &  Pelham Memorial High School Guidance Department’s Career Workshop Series, The panelists - primarily Pelham residents - included Lauen Frasca, a Creative Content Executive; Courtney Maron, Managing Director at PHD - a global communications planning and media buying network; Ashley Matts, Vice President of Strategy & Insights/NBCU Content Distribution at NBC Universal; and Meredith McGinn, Senior Vice President at Cozi TV and LX.TV Productions of NBC Universal.

As technologically advanced the multi-billion dollar TV industry has become, the fact remains that “entertainment”  is still a people-business that relies on good writing… smart, creative thinking…hard work… all with the perfect combination of passion and intellect. So when one of the students asked which specific colleges they should be applying to, the answer was unanimous: a liberal arts college that provides a widely diverse curriculum, and plenty of internship opportunities.  And as “creative” as one may think the business is… it is still a business! So it was highly recommended that business courses be a part of their college careers.

Perhaps what was most valuable was the example of volunteerism that the panel demonstrated: a genuine willingness to take time off from their busy work day to share real-life information and direction that will help students with their career paths.  As Eugene Farrell, PMHS Director of Counseling Services explained, “We are so very fortunate to have these successful professionals - right here in Pelham - give up a huge part of their morning to provide our students with this valuable knowledge. They engaged the students with interesting facts and meaningful advice.”
