Pelham Civic Association: The Beginning

The Pelham Civic Association was founded in 1939 and was first known as the Italian-American Civic Association of Pelham.

It was composed of hard working, Italo-American immigrants who were proud of their community and dedicated to seeing Pelham thrive and prosper. Like many minorities of the day, they had their difficulties.  Not least among them was what they felt was exclusion from the mainstream of life of the town.  Without fanfare or protest, and endowed with a sense of their own human dignity, they band together to form their own civic and charitable organization.

Their initial goals were to educate their peers to civic responsibilities, raise their profile in town affairs, and overall, also enhance the quality of life for all who lived in Pelham.

Their very first charitable function as an organization was to support a card party for the benefit of the Aged in the Home at Eastview.  Their first donation to an outside organization went to the American Red Cross.  In September 1940 the organization set up a town-wide “information bureau” for immigrants of all nationalities, to aid them in the process of assimilation and applying for citizenship.

During World War II, The Pelham Civic Association presented every Pelham resident that went off to war a leather wallet with an engraved insignia of the specific branch of Armed Forces that the soldier served in.

This was the humble, yet noble beginning of The Pelham Civics.  Throughout it almost 70 years, it continued to grow and donate money, time and effort to help the needy, the disabled, the youth and the elderly… to ultimately achieve its present day status and reputation as Westchester County’s most active volunteer, charitable organization.
